Glossary
Legitimate interest
Quick answer
A GDPR lawful basis that allows processing when a company's interest is balanced against, and not overridden by, individuals' rights.
Relying on it requires a documented balancing test, often called a legitimate interests assessment.
Regulators have discussed it as a possible basis for some AI training, but its use is assessed case by case.
