Question
How many records do AI labs want?
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
It depends on the use. Evaluation sets can be valuable with hundreds or a few thousand carefully chosen examples. Training datasets usually need tens of thousands of records or more. Years of history and consistent structure often matter as much as raw count.
Part of: How licensing works
Explanation#
Buyers think in terms of coverage: enough variety to represent real work, including rare cases.
A sample of a few hundred records is often reviewed first to judge fit.
Rights and privacy#
- Confirm customer, vendor and employee agreements allow the use
- Remove or de-identify personal details before anything leaves the company
- Approve the final dataset and permitted uses in writing
How licensing works#
A business describes its data, buyer demand is assessed, scope and permitted use are proposed, the data is prepared and de-identified, an agreement is signed, and the approved dataset is delivered. See data licensing for detail.
