Question
Do AI labs buy data from small companies?
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
Sometimes, but scale matters. Buyers usually want depth: thousands of records over several years. A small company with highly specialized records can still qualify, and data from several similar businesses can be combined. SourceX focuses on U.S. businesses with 50 or more employees at their peak because they tend to have enough history.
Part of: How licensing works
Explanation#
Buyers weigh the cost of contracting and preparation against what a dataset adds. Very small datasets rarely justify that effort on their own.
Specialization can offset size: rare expert workflows are valuable even in smaller volumes.
Rights and privacy#
- Confirm customer, vendor and employee agreements allow the use
- Remove or de-identify personal details before anything leaves the company
- Approve the final dataset and permitted uses in writing
How licensing works#
A business describes its data, buyer demand is assessed, scope and permitted use are proposed, the data is prepared and de-identified, an agreement is signed, and the approved dataset is delivered. See data licensing for detail.
