Quick answer
Before a dataset leaves your company, you need to know what personal details are hiding in it. This PII scanner checks every line of a CSV, JSON, JSONL or plain-text file for the most common sensitive patterns: email addresses, phone numbers, U.S. Social Security numbers, credit and debit card numbers, IBAN bank account numbers, IP addresses and labeled birth dates. Findings are shown masked, counted per type, and you can download a cleaned copy where each match is replaced with a label like [EMAIL]. The scan runs entirely in your browser — the file is never uploaded, so it is safe to use on confidential data.
Your sample is processed in this browser. File contents are not uploaded.
Supported input
Any text file — CSV, JSON, JSONL or plain lines — up to 10 MiB or 25,000 lines.
How it works
Each line is matched against the patterns you select. Card numbers must pass the Luhn checksum and IBANs the mod-97 checksum; Social Security numbers in impossible ranges are skipped; birth dates are flagged only next to a label such as dob. When two patterns overlap, the first one listed wins. Findings are masked on screen and in the report unless you choose to reveal them.
Limitations
- Pattern checks miss names, street addresses, free-text descriptions and anything unusually formatted, and can flag look-alikes such as order numbers. A clean result is not proof the data is free of personal details.
- The cleaned copy replaces matches only; review it before sharing, and keep the original file's rights and approvals in place.
Questions
- How do I find personal data in a dataset?
- Paste or upload a sample and press Check. It flags emails, phone numbers, U.S. Social Security numbers, card numbers, IBANs, IP addresses and labeled birth dates, and can download a cleaned copy.
- Is my file uploaded when I scan for PII?
- No. The scan runs in your own browser and the file contents are never sent to a server, so it is safe for confidential datasets.
- Does a clean result mean the data has no personal details?
- No. Pattern checks miss names, street addresses and free-text descriptions, and can flag look-alikes such as order numbers. Treat it as a first pass, not proof.
- What happens to the matches?
- You see each match masked (for example j***@example.com), a count per type, and you can download a redacted copy with labels like [EMAIL] in place of each match.
- Is my file uploaded?
- No. The file is read and processed in this browser tab, and its contents are not sent to SourceX or anyone else. Closing the tab or pressing Reset clears it.
