Question
Who owns data in a client project?
By SourceX Editorial · Updated
Short answer
It depends on the contract. Deliverables are often owned by the client, while your internal working records, tools and know-how may stay yours. Client-owned material should be excluded unless the client agrees.
Part of: How licensing works
Explanation#
Review master service agreements and statements of work for ownership and confidentiality terms.
Internal process records, like tickets about the work, are often less restricted than the deliverables.
Rights and privacy#
- Confirm customer, vendor and employee agreements allow the use
- Remove or de-identify personal details before anything leaves the company
- Approve the final dataset and permitted uses in writing
How licensing works#
A business describes its data, buyer demand is assessed, scope and permitted use are proposed, the data is prepared and de-identified, an agreement is signed, and the approved dataset is delivered. See data licensing for detail.
