ETL
Quick answer
Extract, transform, load: moving data out of source systems, cleaning and reshaping it, and loading it somewhere new.
ETL is how data gets from tools like a help desk, CRM or ERP into a consistent format. The transform step is where fields are standardized, duplicates removed and sensitive values masked.
When preparing a dataset for licensing, an ETL-style process also records what was changed, which supports the dataset's documentation and lineage.
