Can I sell my business data to AI companies?

Short answer

Yes. Businesses that own proprietary operational data — such as support conversations, call recordings, documents, workflows or industry records — can often license it to AI companies and research teams. Usually the data is licensed, not sold outright: you keep ownership and grant a defined, limited right to use it. You need the legal right to share it, and personal or sensitive information typically has to be removed or de-identified first.

Why AI companies want business data

Modern AI models are trained heavily on public internet text. What's much harder to find is data showing how real work gets done inside companies: how support agents resolve tickets, how experts make decisions, how specialized processes run.

That kind of proprietary data can help AI teams build and evaluate models for specific industries and tasks.

Licensing vs. selling

In most deals you license data rather than sell it. A license defines what the buyer may do (for example, train or evaluate a model), for how long, and what they may not do (for example, resell it).

You generally keep ownership and can often license the same data to other buyers, depending on exclusivity terms.

What you need before you can license data

You must have the right to share it. Check customer contracts, privacy policies, employee agreements and any vendor terms.

Personal information usually needs to be removed or de-identified, and privacy laws such as GDPR or CCPA may apply.

It helps to know roughly what systems you have and how many years of history they contain — you don't need to organize everything upfront.

How the process usually works

1. Describe what data your company has. 2. An intermediary or buyer assesses whether there's demand. 3. You review the proposed scope, permitted use and price. 4. Data is prepared and de-identified. 5. A licensing agreement is signed. 6. The approved dataset is delivered and you get paid.

SourceX follows this approach as an intermediary: you describe your data, we look for relevant AI buyers, and nothing is shared until you approve the terms.

Common questions

Do I lose ownership of my data?
Not in a typical license. You grant defined usage rights while keeping ownership.
Is it legal to sell customer data to AI companies?
It depends on your contracts, privacy policies and applicable law. Personal data usually must be removed or have a valid legal basis. Get legal advice for your situation.
What if I'm not sure my data is valuable?
You don't need to know upfront. An assessment of your systems, volume and industry is usually the first step.
